Couple's Home Will Be Down to Earth
Tampa Tribune, July 2008

MYAKKA CITY - Michael and Denise Pfalzer's new home will have walls made of old car tires, recycled bottles and cans. Rainwater gathered from the rooftop will be used for drinking, washing dishes and flushing toilets before it trickles back out to nourish the gardens. Solar energy will power the home, and the earth's soil will keep it cool.

Earthship Lands in Myakka City
Creative Loafing Sarasota, August 2008

To keep our skin from fusing together at the folds, Floridians need to use air conditioning. Or at least fans. And the energy required to keep us cool forces us to make withdrawals from our natural environment. We don't want to harm the Earth, but we like these little comforts.

The former home of the Tampa Bay Brewing Company in Ybor City seems to be the antithesis of an environmentally sound building. For one, the 2-story brick structure at 1812 N. 15th St. is old -- 103 years old. Two, the high ceilings make heating and cooling the building a massive energy drain. The tar on the top of the building doesn't help; the black surface can reach well above 100 degrees in the summer, heat that inevitably makes its way inside.
